We all have opportunities, big or small, to be the

Maki – “Atlas Hacked” is as substantial as it metaphysical, in its approach

It’s sometimes hard to find the words that accurately bring justice to avant-garde electronic works. With an artist like Maki you almost only have to mention his name for fans of the underground independent scene, to understand the potential for a great album of music. Maki should be an instantly recognizable global name within the mainstream electronic world of sound. His latest release, “Atlas Hacked”, is a classic album in the making. And I do not say this lightly. There is a growing body of research that has examined the impact on adolescents and adults of internet and social media

Prodi Lemaj & Skuhd Taylor – “PRESSURE” – a combination of aggressive deliveries mixed with a cool demeanor

Since its beginnings, hip-hop’s most explosive moments have often been its collaborations. When two rappers team up unexpectedly, the results can be compelling. However, when two artists work together frequently they develop a kind of alchemy—everything they’re on together becomes more than the sum of its parts—which is why when you see, see Prodi Lemaj & Skuhd Taylor next to each other on a track-list, you know it’s going to result in something special. It’s those connections—the rappers who keep working on each other—that make rap such a dynamic, versatile genre. Prodi Lemaj & Skuhd Taylor are a duo of

“Days of Summer” – Will Diehl’s voice is made for story and verse

What is remarkable about Will Diehl is not simply that he’s one of the finest, thoughtful underground singer-songwriters around, but the fact that over the course of his career, he has staying true to his essential folk-rock and Americana core while, incredibly, continuing to break new ground. Now on his latest album, “Days of Summer”, we get to hear the most celestial and melodious vocals he’s ever committed to record. The songs themselves blend elements of pop, folk and even jazz and psychedelic rock, to produce an otherworldly, yet intimate set. As always the lyrics, focused and penetrating, deft, emblematic

Forest Robots – “After Geography” – an emotionally-searching, calculated musical narrative

“After Geography” is the fourth Forest Robots full-length album following, 2018’s ‘Supermoon Moonlight Part I’ and ‘Timberline And Mountain Crest’, as well as 2019’s ‘Times When I Know You’ll Watch The Sky’. The album harks back on Fran’s past outdoor explorations. The California-based electronic composer, is a seasoned mountaineer with over 400 ascents and 6,000 miles of x-country river crossing, rock climbing, snow trudging, rock scrambling and bush whacking. The album’s core theme centers on life altering situations while traversing in the mountains, when unexpected variables arise and regardless of your preparation, you have only your intuition to guide you.

Bruce Baker – “I Am Your Healer” has no time for shallowness

Bruce Baker was 12 years old when he wrote his first song, entitled People Do It Everyday”. He was attending Progress Village Elementary at the time, and this was just the beginning for him. At age 15 the young singer recognized that he was called by God to minister in the anointing of melody when he entered into a church singing contest and won. As he got older Bruce struggled with eating disorders, family issues and drug addictions that seemed like it would take his life. “I was addicted to drugs for 10 years, but God delivered me from Heroin

GONETCHA – “Instincts” – Stylistically carves out its own path

Too clever for the mainstream, GONETCHA released a string of acclaimed records, and covered a lot of artistic ground over their five albums – Métro de Pensées, Mission, Fickle Games, Pragmatic and their latest, “Instincts”. Re-listening to the band’s catalog, I’ve noticed how detailed and packed with ideas their albums are. Launched in Lyon, France, by a bass player, GONETCHA is an alternative rock project that started out in 2017. They are an intelligent group, brimming with good tunes and interesting ideas. Their bass-driven sound is a great window dressing for the group’s inherent hooks and melodies, and enhances the

Staton: “Mapped:Sins,” Will Knock The Socks Off Everyone Else In The Genre!

Since their launch in 2010 Staton has appeared on stage for approximately 120 live performances in the Netherlands. Over the past years the band has matured, developing their unique sound and lyrics. Living in Amsterdam’s red light district worked as an inspiration for lead singer Lara Mol. Lara’s fascination lead her to write songs like “Dark Side of the City,” “Cocktails” and “Barefoot.” In these songs Lara explores the different sides of the red light district. Living in the area, she realized that the red light district is not only a dark and tragic place. She discovered humor and mystery.

Staton, which is made up of Lara Mol (lead vocals), Luc Pustjens (bass), Niels Nuiver (drums), Tijn Driessen (keyboards) and Michiel Claessen (guitar), have completed the album “Mapped:Sins,” under the guiding hands of Producers, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M.,Big Star) and J.B Meijers (Goo Back to the Zoo, De Dijk), who also shared in mixing the album.

“Mapped:Sins,” is one of those rare albums that you can listen right through without having to skip any tracks. I’d say these are 4 absolute classics. My absolute favorite track on here is probably “Dark Side Of The City,” but not far off behind is, “Riot”. Lara just sounds so strong on these track, and the lyrics really hit you in the face. In fact, one of the great things about this album are the lyrics. There’s none of this “I love you and can’t live without you” drivel that packs most albums, but every track here has some kind of significance behind it. If you listen to the lyrics, you should be able to easily draw the links between what each song is saying and the overall picture of its  simply encoded messages.

Staton manage to do what many bands before them have failed to; write contemplative, inquisitory and almost bittersweet songs to punchy rhythms and not sound ridiculous while doing it. The band’s songwriting, vocals and powerfully persuasive image will obviously do the rest to help “Mapped:Sins,” become a roaring success.

However, adding to the extraordinary flavor of this album is not only the beautiful voice that the gorgeous Lara Mol possesses, but also the eclectic nature of the songs. From power pop to rock to electronic funk, “Mapped:Sins,” is replete and an overwhelming joy to listen to from the first song to the last!

This is a band you can’t help loving. Beautiful, brilliant, thoughtful, creative and expressive, Lara Mol comes together with the other four talented band members to create an album that will knock the socks off everyone else in the genre.

“Mapped:Sins,” displays what a rock band should be able to do. It’s not just five people ranting and raving aimlessly in extreme poses, it’s five people dealing with life experiences and it’s effects. No candied apples or multi-colored rainbows for this one of a kind band, only down-to-earth experiences are expressed on Staton’s album. A must-own for anyone who loves real organic-rock music.

Staton is a great band and I can’t wait until their next full-length album comes out, I already have a copy reserved.
