Musicbyko: “Life In Element” – a melded perspective derived from a focused vision

Rap and hip-hop is no longer strictly about an artist’s lyrical ability, there is a series of beats and melodies that need to come together in perfect harmony to create the sonic excellence that fans demand to hear. To that end, Musicbyko is the embodiment of real modern rap in a production heavy hip-hop environment that has very little care for bars. This Bay Area rapper from Oakland, CA, has a message of ambition and a constitution of excellence that he is attempting to establish within his craft. It is clear that he has grown into more than just a

Love Ghost: “Scarlet Letter” – an at once compelling and distressful storyline

The scarlet letter is meant to be a symbol of shame, a stigma someone bears for a misdeed he or she has committed. The term often refers to public shame forced upon a person as a means of ostracizing him or her. Those branded with a scarlet letter feel the punitive vengeance of an unforgiving society. Instead it becomes a powerful symbol of identity, in the latest video of the song, “Scarlet Letter”, taken off the album “Lobotomy” by the Los Angeles alternative rock band, Love Ghost. The video tells the story of the band’s violist, Mya Greene and her

Vessel Decimal – “CONVERSION: Level One” guided by a sense of purpose

The appeal of Vessel Decimal – a band founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 2007 – lies in the sheer strength of the songwriting. Moreover there are powerful riffs, and you’ll get lost in the grooves, absorbing the punishing crush of the bottom end, but also reflecting on the narrative elements found on the brand new album, “CONVERSION: Level One”. Vessel Decimal are all about the balance found in the music, and the spiraling riffs that define their sound demonstrate that time and time again. It’s nice though that the band takes the time to back off, to allow you to

TEK SWISHA: Drops “Ground Work” Mixtape!

Tek Swisha is an up and coming artist from Boston, MA. He was born on December 14 to a mother with Southern roots and a father of West Indian decent. Raised in a rough neighborhood, Tek had to be tough and his experiences are often displayed in his work. Born into a family where music was a heavy influence, he quickly picked up the habit.

Although he began doing music at a young age, it wasn’t until he grew older that he got the opportunity to record. Tek released his first mixtape ‘Jackin’ Season’ back in June of 2011. Now, he has released his second mixtape, ‘Ground Work’.

The 14-track mixtape Ground Work, also showcases features by GYung Haze, Shatta Lindo, Jay Trap Dollas and M.I.G. It features rhythmic, musical beats rather than much of the hardcore sampling you would hear from many other hip hop artists. Also, Tek Swisha uses his sensational flow, great lyrics and artistic talents to make this a great listen.

“Tru Story” is the perfect opener, with Tek flowing quickly and accurately. This is easily one of the more catchy songs, and ultimately a big highlight. “Niggers Scared, Hoes Ain’t” is a classic parody, with some sweet and explicit rhymes. The set of songs that fall in around the middle of the album all feature some fantastic beat hooks, solid lyrics and great rapping from Tek. “My City” features an appearance by G. “Ryde Out”  is one of my favourites on the album, featuring a great guest appearance from Yung Haze.

With only his second formal contribution to the mixtape scene, Tek Swisha manages to vividly recreate the world of gangsters and hoes, as well as a world of hope, and all in one bundle of rhymes and a deeply analytical intellect. His unique flow calls for nothing more than admiration, as he blazes, sparkles, shimmers, and shocks all across Ground Work.

From beginning to end, this mixtape is a great listen. Tek is an able poet. His lyrics give you visuals and his thoughts are way deeper than the average rapper. If you want to listen to lyrics that make you think and are creative, just get past the explicit cursing and you’ll hear a whole lot more down there. The beats and rhymes are exceptional! The messages are real and guest appearances shine.

This mixtape does what many don’t. It delivers! It’s mature, has amazing and well-used features, and is pieced together with top notch production. Most importantly, Tek manages to bring you the street in its entire inglorious splendour from a perspective of one who is still in touch with what it’s like. The beats, emotion and lyrics, though overtly explicit, are amazing. This is throwback to real rap music and it will stand the test of time!
