On Live at LoneStar Wine Cellars, Crystal Yates defines her artistic being with this collection of songs which gives listeners a great musical ride from start to finish. This Ep is so full of energy and pure talent, that I was surprised by some of these songs. Crystal explores and expands her musical directions with just her voice and an acoustic guitar or piano at hand, without of course forgetting, her husband Will who accompanies her along the way.
The songwriting totally shines on this effort as Crystal gives each tune a heart and soul, and some of the most intense acoustic grooves I’ve heard in a long, long time. She knows no limitations or boundaries and blends her voice into so many styles of music effortlessly. Giving the Ep such depth, edge and originality, all this without having to be a diva, instead she infuses these tunes with her soulful bluesy strut and guitar textures while putting a timeless spin to the music that all ages will appreciate in any moment in time. Crystal has fashioned a real musical gem of a record which should position her right in the forefront of talented women singer-songwriters.
Of the five tunes included on this Ep, I particularly liked…every single one of them! From “Let That Record Play” and “Alabama Boy” to “Goodbye Letter”, “Gotta Be” and “No More Sighin”. Forced to choose just one favorite song, with a pistol pointed to my temple, I would go for “Gotta Be”. That’s because I’m a sucker for a slow burner.
Live at LoneStar Wine Cellars is Crystal Yates at the top of her game. All the maturity and experience of this talented performer is on display here. Her vocals are the right blend of worldliness and emotion while the playing is just stellar. The songs chosen here are a fine balance of softer ballads like the hypnotic “Gotta Be,” and “Goodbye Letter” to the quirky country infused “No More Sighin”. Even when things get soulfully funky on songs like “Alabama Boy” the feeling is never forced; the songs flow along effortlessly. They don’t sound like they were put here just because something upbeat was needed. Even when the sound is very bluesy like on “Let That Record Play”, Crystal makes it work brilliantly. There really is nothing here that I didn’t enjoy.
Live at LoneStar Wine Cellars showcases deep, rich tones and warm glowing sounds. All throughout Crystal Yates’ vocal performance is impeccable, you feel the depth of emotion pouring into every verse. The lyrics are also powerful, offering the kind of inspiration most will find personally relevant. This album serves Crystal’s fans and new listeners, a stellar selection of delicious entrees, well worth savoring.
