Mayhem Attack Squad: “Gracefully Insane” is meant to Rock the House!

Mayhem Attack Squad was formed in Ithaca, NY late 2013. Their high energy, avante-garde sound fuses influences from many genres, including ska, reggae, punk rock, metal, hip hop and dub.  They are one of those bands that just hits you. They have a ton of great songs. They write great music and positive lyrics that can help you get through tough times.

Mayhem Attack Squad is simply stellar. They are arguably one of the best ska fusion indie bands today. The sound of their music and the effort to make some good lyrics, not to mention their ability to rock the house with those stabbing horns is simply awesome.

The band obviously has a vision and they are nailing it. “Don’t Miss the Sunshine” and “Big 12” are instant classics. “Gracefully Insane” will also put a smile on your face.  While “What I Need” is meant to rock the house before the infectious “Not Going Back” sets in.

Truly, few debuts are as complete and fulfilling as this one; in most cases they are mere indications of a bands coming glory. Not the case of Mayhem Attack Squad. This debut EP is truly a Ska masterpiece. Why? A variety of reasons. There is Trent Cortazzo (Frontman), Paula Arzac (Tenor Sax), David Baird (Trumpet), Kristin Morgan (Trombone), Jared Kaputkin (Guitar), Dacia Driscoll (Bass) and Sean Bonney-Burrill (Drums).

Cortazzo is truly the heart of the band. His vocals reach rapid-fire, energetic heights, which give the fast-paced rhythms even more vivacity. The band’s song writing is also extremely original and diverse. Songs do not follow clichéd arrangement patterns, and you never know what to expect next.

The other sections of the band are equally amazing. Bonney-Burrill on drums is a talented contemporary Ska drummer. Dacia Driscoll is also a terrific bassist with some solid riffs, while Jared Kaputkin has just the right amount of guitar flair to keep the rhythms spunky and sparkling. And finally, the horn section is what gives Mayhem Attack Squad their ultimate power.

Unlike some Ska bands nowadays, the horn section does not have corny little horn lines or occasional bursts here and there. Mayhem Attack Squad features complex horn parts which define the sound of the band. All that having been said this makes for a truly terrific band.

“Gracefully Insane” is by far and wide one of the best debut Ska EP’s assembled recently. It is just hypnotically amazing; I can listen to it for days on end. There is not one second of music that is not amazing.

Mayhem Attack Squad’s sound is so full and rich, and their horn riffs are so multifarious, that this album will quickly rise to be one of your favorites, if you in any way favor Ska-based music…and even if you don’t!

The musicality and production values here are incredible. This is tight, clean, fast, tuneful and intelligent music.Ska isn’t dead, it just went on hold for a while, until Mayhem Attack Squad got ready to release, “Gracefully Insane” !
