Lee Lee Lanea: “Basswhipped” resonates gloriously

Beats aren’t gendered. So why are we still in the dark ages when it comes to gender equality in the music studio? Women represent less than 5% of music producers and engineers. Yes, the music industry—like every industry on this patriarchal planet—is sexist. That is not news. But this means we’re missing out on a whole world of sounds, stories, and perspectives. Our culture has systematically ingrained this idea that technology is more of a man’s thing. Then of course there’s the fact that most men get freaked out when women do things better than them or even as good

Mobb Boss: “Lil Lady” – the depth, perspective and hunger of a performer

Being respected, revered and admired as an emcee is what often elevates a rapper from being one who merely strings together words that rhyme into an appreciated lyricist of the highest order. However, while there are a long string of spitters and scribes that have come along, the elite few who have found themselves mentioned in conversations and debates when discussing quality artists, have one thing in common: a track record of consistently delivering music that make the most of their lyrical abilities and serve as a piece of themselves. When speaking of today’s pack of underground orators, Mobb Boss

Pastor Peter Unger Releases New Single “The Memories of God”

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, USA — Peter wrote this song for the older people, who he had the honor and privilege of ministering to over many years. Pete explained that many had a humble, kind, and appreciative dignity; qualities born of a long life shaped by faith and wisdom. Most were to experience the debilitating effects of age, including mental decline and dementia. During visits he struggled and prayed with them through the inevitable spiritual and emotional valleys of such a decline. He further explained that those, for whom faith and a personal relationship with God most defined what it meant to

King Draper: “1992” – simplistic in its premise but unquestionably real in its execution

You can’t write about underground or independent hip-hop and not write about King Draper. Or at least I seemingly can’t. For the past couple years the man’s been a nearly constant presence in my journalistic exploits. And now, I’m sitting down again to review his latest 11 track project, “1992”.  The King hits me with dope music and I write about it, and I’m more than happy with the arrangement. If you’ve peeped any of King Draper’s projects before, what you get from this project won’t surprise you. Draper with his soulful, jazzy, production and his smart anecdotes detailing tales

Edgler Vess: “Violet” – essential to your hip-hop collection

Every album that Edgler Vess releases, breathes with a distinct personality, each a shape-shifting assemblage of personage and programming that sounds more like a kind of miraculous hyperlinked sound collage than rap. His lyrical feats go unmatched for sheer idiosyncrasy and insight; beyond rap enthusiasts, many of his strongest supporters are probably writers and music heads. A master of the microphone and the beats, Vess has constantly swapped out his tools and themes, avoiding revision and instead choosing innovation. When Edgler Vess does what he does, he’s impossible to ignore. He’s profound, he’s impressive, and he’s damn entertaining. In short,

Reverse Mechanic: “Cruise Control” – The lyrical skill, the tempo changes, the technique, all of it!

Reverse Mechanic is a completely independent hip hop artist breakin’ it down in Minneapolis, MN. As a former published poet with a Bachelor’s in creative writing, he has been doing the reverse limbo, raising the bar for lyricists since 2012. His recent music videos on YouTube have helped him gain notoriety, winning several Artists and Repertoire Awards from Beat100, as well as entertaining fans throughout the year. Boonie Mayfield: “Boon Documented: The Soundtrack Vol.1” – the future still looks bright!

Composer, artist and producer, Boonie Mayfield has dropped the album, “Boon Documented: The Soundtrack Vol.1”. This is the first of 3 volumes to be released this year. The project comprises beats Boonie featured throughout his self-produced reality show/web-series, called ‘Boon Documented’ in 2012. All the tracks were produced between 2007 and 2012. This collection showcases 18 tracks worth of Boom Bap, Jazz, Soul and Funk styled beats. Full albums from hip-hop producers can pull one way or the other, working either as a too-narrow spotlight for the name on the album jacket or providing a platform from which only the guests shine.

Then there are the albums that manage to put both the producer and the rappers on equal footing. “Boon Documented: The Soundtrack Vol.1” doesn’t suffer from either. This is a pure beat album, no rapping. Well there is one or two tracks that feature rapping or singing, but really too few to mention. And the spotlight is not even on Boonie, it’s on the music.

Having made the successful transformation from rapper to producer, and back again, Boonie has reached the point where the artistic trip from inspiration to production feels more-or-less instantaneous. Boonie’s beats are dark and noirish, but not in a way that intends to convey malice.

The tones are almost soft to the touch, with a vibe of relaxation and playfulness that keeps things from feeling too serious. Thick rolling and thumping bass-lines, drums that are popping and snapping, rich resonating keyboards result in luscious soul-stirring grooves.

But what makes this record work is Boonie Mayfield balanced blend of creativity, craft, and atmosphere, a real underground beat collection that works best when it plays to its strengths. And its strengths are definitely live instrumentation, as Boonie is a multi-instrumentalist. So expect many rumbling basslines and gorgeous keyboard pieces to be played by the man himself.

Boonie has been a constant dweller in the underground for a few years now and everything he does is inspired and passionate, extremely melodic and keeps the repeat button going. He has assembled some very creative pieces that should actually be among those most acclaimed in all of modern Hip Hop. But we all know how this industry works.

Producers have been the embodiment of the Hip Hop sound from generation to generation. With so many up-and-coming new talents, one can only hope that they can step into the shoes that have been set for them by the likes of Eric Sermon, Timbaland, RZA, Large Pro, Kany West, Marley Marl, Mannie Fresh, Madlib, 9th Wonder, Dr Dre, J Dilla, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, The Alchemist, Dj Quik, Just Blaze, and all the others I left off this sample list.

But with talents like Boonie Mayfield around the future still looks bright. Boonie actually reminds me of a sort of Pharrell Williams in a way, as his talents are not limited to any one sphere of hip-hop – he raps, sings and producers – but overrides the genre itself. The impression is that he could easily write, produce and perform a song in just about any popular music style if he wanted to.

In the meantime grab a hold of “Boon Documented: The Soundtrack Vol.1”, mastered by Artisan Jones to get a taste of the greatness this kid, from originally from Colorado Springs, is able to put together.
