Omar Bowing: “Women” – the expansive arrangement gives it a progressive bent

Omar Bowing is an independent musician and songwriter located in Austin, Tx. Omar who plays the guitar and guitarviol works with a revolving group of musicians to bring his songs to life. In particular he often collaborates with Tyson Yen, who has lent his voice to almost all of Bowing’s tracks. Omar Bowing’s latest musical creation is simply entitled “Women”. Though mirroring the endeavors of history-making females, the track intends to be a respectful tribute to women in general – from mothers to wives, and sisters to nieces, daughters, friends and co-workers, etc. And in fact the track releases on the International Women’s Day.

Omar Bowing explained how “Women” turned out to be a big challenge in its execution. Apart from the usual rock instrumentation and vocals, Omar called in 10 musicians from a real symphonic orchestra to complete the recording. Bowing has created some of the most memorable underground, independent rock music in the last couple of years, and his latest is no exception.  “Women” stays within the sounds we know of Omar Bowing – everything here is definitely a rock song – while the expansive arrangement gives it a progressive bent.

Those familiar with the legendary bands, Electric Light Orchestra and Jethro Tull will hear traces of both collectives here. Luscious strings, shimmering pianos and soaring vocals drive the song as Bowing’s guitar adds lingering emotional strains to the mix.

It is a welcome comfort and inspiration at the very time when we need it. “Women” is ongoing proof that Omar Bowing is among the most talented in his genre. Compared to his previous work, “Women” distinguishes itself in both its creative expansiveness and musical tautness.

The rougher edge to Bowing’s music is replaced with more melodic succinctness and the hooks dangle much closer to the ground, while the vocals spread to cover a wider sonic spectrum. This song is beautifully crafted and has an eloquent and invigorating quality to it.

To me, this is unquestionably his best recorded effort yet. It’s much more than just one chord progression with changing melody and evolving production. This is meticulously crafted. At a time when radio is dominated by talentless dweebs modulating their auto-tuned voices and lack of musical skill, this is a welcome breeze.

“Women” makes you realize how much you’ve missed actual music that contains melody, harmony, a coda, a reprise, lyrics and a tune you can actually carry. Much less remember. This methodically envelopes your senses before totally sucking you in.

This is a prime example of creative rock music at its finest. For those interested in hearing contemporary music from one of rock’s lesser known, unsung craftsman, look no further. This song represents an evolution of a musician who has new things to say and new ways to say them.

The wonderful harmony, gorgeous melody, and artful guitar breaks are all here, as is the great singing voice of Tyson Yen. The orchestral interludes in mid-song will run shivers down your spine. The lyrics will do the rest to enchant you: “You perfect creation / Lovable and powerful / You genius you inspiration / So sweet and graceful / You gave me a life to thrive / You are always my bright light”.

Absolutely brilliant and deeply moving. This release signals a triumphant return to the studio, for Omar Bowing in 2019!
