Downtown Mystic – ‘3-Way Heartbreak’ – more than just a nostalgic listening experience!

One of the things Downtown Mystic notoriously excel at is masking emotional lyrics with upbeat, driving-with-the-windows-rolled-down kind of melodies. Their double-side single, ‘3-Way Heartbreak’, which also includes the track ‘Same Old Lover’, recorded in 1983, has all that and more. While for most other contemporary bands, it’s hard to recapture the real magic of rock n’ roll, for Robert Allen and his crew, this comes easy. They grew up during rock’s golden era, hence Downtown Mystic’s music lives up to the genre’s legacy, rather than just riding on its coattails. The ‘3-Way Heartbreak’ single, on the Sha-La Music, Inc. catalog,

The sound design throughout his latest single “Cut And Taste” is what we’ve come to expect from this creative top tier producer: popping percussion, basslines that melt like butter and a healthy dose of twisted horns to make everything bump in a soul-like fashion. Sprinkled around the track are sonic effects that keep

Ren Daversa: “SALTWATER” – on some kind of righteous mission!

San Diego-based singer songwriter, Ren Daversa is a working musician, who also spends a fair amount of her time playing her music on a volunteer basis. She is always happy to donate her talents to fundraisers, charity and awareness events. Influenced by artists like Cold War Kids, Tori Amos and Jeff Buckley, to classical, rock and country music, she is proud to present her 9 track album, entitled “SALTWATER”. Awesome. This is an overused word for the most part, but in this case, awesome, is the right one. This is a perfect record, for what Daversa, conceptually and artistically, set out to do. These are all great songs, blending pop, folk and indie-rock flavors. Ren’s voice is sultry and smoky, but then turns on a dime and becomes honest and alto. Yes, “SALTWATER” is an incredibly strong collection of songs covering a range of moods and textures.

Ren Daversa is unapologetically unpretentious and she’s on some kind of righteous mission. A beautiful rich voice. A singer-songwriter soul. Lyrical poetry of an emotional touch. Ren is a golden ticket of perfection in singing from the soul. Hence this enriched album of storytelling lingers on the mind and makes one flow with the music. Ren is smooth in execution. Her voice is loud, proud and vibrantly resonant right from the poignant opening track, “Oceans Of You”. The song starts rather gently and tentatively, before exploding into a voluminous, undulating wave of emotion.

Ren Daversa refuses to do what modern music juggernauts do in spades; pander to stereotypical narratives, under-utilize the instrumentals and downright hijack a pop or urban intonation with the intention of being relevant and popular. Ren is here to grab your attention and keep it, but she isn’t here to let you dictate her narrative.

On “Heart To Heart” she makes the music she wants to make, holding onto her folksy roots. And then goes one step deeper on the beautiful and essential organic soundscape of “Cut And Dried”. Ren’s presence behind the microphone is simply a hand in glove fit, times one hundred. “Just One Word” is rhythmically elegant.

Ren is incredible at executing this acoustic guitar-driven upbeat motif, and the production value is almost equally a highlight. And just to prove she can go one better, “Closer” is her rock out anthem. Ren cuts loose both vocally and musically here. Lots of fiery guitars, thumping drums, and layered harmonies, push this track into a euphoric listening experience. Daversa runs the gamut all throughout this record, with up-tempo tracks like this at her disposal.

“Firelight” is another quintessential example of how Ren Daversa simply refuses to pander to the commonplace conventions that plague modern music. Rich organic sounds and plenty of harmonies spread under an expansive melody.

Ren shows a striking amount of empathy for the listener with her conversational tones on “The Upside Down”, before totally mesmerizing her audience with a stupefying vocal performance on “Funny”, showing off her full range.

By the time she closes the album with the finger-snapping rhythm of “Type A”, there is no doubt that Ren Daversa deserves every bit of credit that will undeniably come her way. “SALTWATER” is set to take Daversa up to the next level.
