Dress Like a Woman is a rock band from Barcelona,Spain. Formed in October 2010 and composed of Alba (vocals & lyrics), Roger (guitar & keyboards), Marc (bass) and Nacho (drums). The band tries to introduce its own vision of rock, which is at the base of all its songs. In May 2012 their first EP “Now That You Are Thirteen” was released, and with it the band intends to expand their reach and make a name for themselves on the music scene.
I’m in the middle of listening to the Ep for the fifth time as I write this review. The initial listens were great. The band has fine tuned its sound, from a vast variety of influences, delivering rock driven tunes with smart, well written lyrics and a touch of intriguing electronica.
Dress Like a Woman is a young and extremely talented quartet. Their music is heartfelt, honest and epic. There is so much to say about the Ep, and I could probably fill up pages talking about how great it is, but I won’t. I’ll give you the facts: the musicianship on this record is way above par. The guitar and keyboard work from Roger is both technical and intricate, all while remaining tasteful and appealing. Nacho, on drums, has a sense of rhythm that very few drummers possess. Alba flawlessly steers through winding melodies and elaborate harmonies, while bassist Marc has active and precise bass lines that carry the songs perfectly throughout their arrangements.
Dress Like a Woman is currently on the rise, seeking to become an important band on the indie scene. “Now That You Are Thirteen” is definitely one of the better albums of this genre that I’ve heard in a while. Every song on the Ep, from “Killer Inside,” “Weaving,” “Diablo,” “Nebula” and “Advertise Me” is a gem and has something different to offer, with my personal favorite, being the straight rock sound of “Advertise Me,” with it’s solid rhythms, hooks and searing guitar solos, plus the aggressive vocals lines delivered by Alba.
“Now That You Are Thirteen” starts out slow but picks up speed as it goes along. Kind of like a beautiful vintage sports car, only once it picks up momentum, it seems more like a Formula One Ferrari.
Any alternative rock fan will love this Ep. Lead singer Alba’s voice comes though with sheer passion and energy in each and every track. No song is uninteresting – each is unique and special. The lyrics are compelling and mesh with the music perfectly.
Overall, “Now That You Are Thirteen” is a solid recording, very mature and honestly deserves every listen it receives.
