Recently In 2015 Dylan Tauber completed his seventh album, titled “Near Death Experience”. Haunting, evocative, mysterious, and magnificent, the album offers 13 musical explorations of sound and sensation that sometimes soothe and sometimes uplift. The songs unfold in rolling waves, each more complex and richly layered than the last, yet each fully capable of standing alone as a musically satisfying experience.

The beauty of “Near Death Experience” is that, even with the separate standout songs, it flows together as one complete journey with each song feeding seamlessly into the next. It provides a memorable musical adventure for the listener and confirms the greatness heard on previous albums.

Despite often being slapped with a New Age label to his name, Dylan Tauber really is nothing close to being airy fairy musician and is generally darker than your typical New Age music. Soulful, hypnotic, mesmerizing, intense, unique and spiritual are all words that immediately come to mind with listening to this album which as the title suggest explore varying themes relating to near-death experiences.

Though sometimes scarily gruesome, there’s a haunting beauty that prevails throughout – like ghosts rising from the past -while the lyrics, spoken words and music tell of harrowing experiences and surprising rebirths.

The “Near Death Experience” continues Tauber’s explorations into esoteric, off-center keyboard music, mixed with samples, beats and ethereal vocals.  The female lead vocals, featuring Jennifer and Karmen Novko on tracks like “Into The Light”, “Carry Me”,  “The Sea” as well as the title track “Near Death Experience”, creates astonishing, dreamy soundscapes where the voice ebbs and flows, and simply takes your breath away.

On the other hand, the tracks, “Practice”, “Naked Bass” and “Triumphant”, showcases the different facets of Dylan Tauber’s electronic music prowess as he wades through beat-driven rhythms and melodic synth music.

This is an album that flows from beginning to end without a single dead spot, or a single wrong note. The music is dark with, at times, a bit of an edge. The lyrics are perfect and the vocals are used as an instrument. There are many great songs on this album but you will have to discover them yourself as you work your way through the deep-thinking themes.

Dylan Tauber’s songs are almost like stories. The songs may grow and change as they progress and many have several different movements to them. There is a beautiful blend of the different types of instruments in perfect proportions making the sum more than its parts. This is one artist where you’ll want to collect all of his albums, and “Near Death Experience” is a must have to any collection.
