Dondi was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa. At the age of eight, Dr. Carlton Lake, of The Philadelphia Music Academy, recruited him to sing with his world famous boys’ choir. Dondi traveled to England, Paris and Wales with this group and competed for the title of “World’s Best Boys Choir”. Later on he studied vocals, composition and music theory. During that time he was also a member of Philadelphia’s All City Chorus. As a very seasoned performer and a member of the band JellyRoll, he has worked venues from Madison Square Garden to the White House.
The first single from Dondi’s upcoming album, “Enough For Two,” introduces a nostalgic elegance of classic R&B combined with Dondi’s soulful vocals. This brother is an oasis in the desert of what masquerades as contemporary Black music.
For better or worse, depending on your view, the stars of urban music are changing left and right in an attempt to salvage their careers, they’re adding partying jams, Autotune and explicit language. Thank heavens here’s one man you can turn to that comes with quality R&B and Soul without breaking the classic formula that we all know – smooth music, a powerful voice and meaningful lyrics.
Dondi is a man who sounds like an adult instead of a perpetually horny teenager, someone with real-life perspective. This is an artist capable of filling the void created by the loss of artists of the caliber of Gerald LeVert and Luther Vandross, with all due respect.
If Dondi hasn’t found his way into your music collection yet, I strongly suggest you check him out right now on “Enough For Two”. Though this Philadelphia born artist is still pretty much under the radar, from a global viewpoint, his deep tones can draw comparison to many greats. And he’s proven himself to be one of the few current artists capable of sounding like an authentic throwback and completely contemporary at the same time.
His rich vocals make you remember what love is really about – giving. And with his earthy pipes and native feel for classic soul, Dondi does not have need to even indulge in studio wizardry. “Enough For Two” is an exceptional showcase of a beautifully written mid-tempo groove that highlights Dondi’s ever-talented voice and heartfelt message.
The lyrics can be quite alluring, invoking the romanticism of love while implementing the torment of heartbreak. Combined with the well-executed music production, you get an excellent fusion between cutting edge technique and pure talent.
