The rise of electronic dance music has changed the industry: Massive festivals headlined by megastar DJs have become crucial to the bottom line, and big-name producers have remade Vegas residencies with eye-popping paydays at exclusive clubs. In amidst of all these transitions, sensitive creatives like Greg Newman, rise with their overarching musical traits: lush, yet minimal beat-induced instrumental beds, that often muse on the ideas of experiencing exquisite mental relaxation and transmuting weary body parts into vaporizing astral material as light as the midnight air itself.
His instrumentals are at once smoldering, synth-accented destinations that tantalizingly showcase his ability to create both mood music and dance rhythms in the same instant. Greg Newman’s music is equally at home on your bedroom headphones as it is comfortable with EDM’s streamers, lasers, and giant crowds.
And the proof is to be found in the deep house track, “Yin” taken from the Yin & Yang EP under his moniker Blank Page. I think it helps solidify what Newman is truly about from a musical standpoint.
Greg Newman’s monikers Blank Page and Newman & Me will surely be on the rise if continues to pump out thoughtful, well-arranged and brilliantly produced music like “Yin”. Next level electronic music, regardless of all the preconceived ideas, is not as simple to make as it seems.
There are a whole lot of clichés to circumnavigate if you don’t want to end up sounding like every other DJ at your local shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon matinee set. For me, only two words separate a serious music producer from a startup fame-seeker – “exuberance” and “restraint”.
How a producer balances the weight of those words in his compositions is what set’s him above the simple four-to-the-floor pack. And Greg Newman mixes with a precise digital scale at hand!
With all the technology at hand, it’s an easy task to load up a thumping beat and infuse it with as many astonishing effects and samples as you can. Now there is absolutely nothing wrong with that if you like your music to hit you like a hammer on the head.
But if like me, you choose to be charmed, seduced and then totally mesmerized by sound, DJ/Producers like Greg Newman have to be your choice, and right now “Yin” has to be your goto track!
MORE ABOUT: Greg Newman is an Electronic Music Producer & DJ from London, England. After his debut release “Autumn” reached No.3 in the Trackitdown charts, and his follow up EP gained support from BBC Introducing, Greg is starting to gain recognition for his work under both of his production names – Blank Page and Newman & Me. Influenced in the earlier days by the house scene in Sweden, and more recently by the exploding scene in the UK, Greg looks up to the likes of Steve Angello, Axwell, Sebastien Ingrosso, Mark Knight, Third Party, Tim Mason, Dusky & Bontan to name a few. His DJ style reflects the variety of music that he loves to produce – whether pumping out Progressive House as Blank Page or deeper vibes under the alias of Newman & Me, expect to be taken on a journey from start to finish.
