Zachery Duncan, or rather M.C. ZackAttack , has been influenced by new age lyrical poets who speak their mind through music since 2010. Soon he’ll be releasing his newest mixtape “Mind Over Madness”. M.C. ZackAttack has recently dropped his single, “Rap Or Die!” Let me start off by saying this track isn’t for everyone, you either love it or hate it, I would say it’s a hit and miss for certain people. We all know that the quality of hip-hop has gone downhill, with a lot of artists either going for shock value with vulgar lyrics or relying heavily on glossy production rather than good lyrics. On “Rap Or Die!” M.C. ZackAttack ignores both theories, basing his track on lyricism. Now, I know the type of reputation M.C. ZackAttack may acquire in the industry, right off the cuff a lot of people will think he is ‘soft’. Well, who knows what that really means? I don’t really get the whole ‘soft’ concept. But it may have more than something to do with envy towards lyrical rappers.
Either way, “Rap Or Die!” has a great blend of what hip-hop should be. An awesome beat combined with good lyricism. M.C. ZackAttack tends to not be overly vulgar, which is positive for some who find it a little awkward blasting curse-word filled music in a family situation.
You’ll feel comfortable listening to this track as the Atlanta rapper tackles the theme of his daily grind and his passion for rap, which is at an all-time high here. In fact the song title spells it out plain and clear, as M.C. ZackAttack only gives himself two options – “Rap Or Die!”
It’s nice to hear music that it’s not all about money and hoes, and more about a subject normal hardworking people can relate to. It’s uplifting and empowering to hear somebody emphasize their commitment to their craft without the usual empty-vessel boasting and cursing about how much better than everybody else they are.
“Rap Or Die!” is not perfect in every way, and it never professes to be, just as much as M.C. ZackAttack is still a young emcee on the up, in the process of sharpening the tools of his personal skillset. However looking across his 3 year catalog, it’s hard not to admit that he has been making strides in his forward momentum.
His biggest challenge now – in my modest opinion – if he wants to move to the next level, or gain mainstream success, is lifting the recording and production quality of his releases. The industry is currently obsessed with glossy diamond cut sonic aesthetics.
And no matter how creative musical pieces are, if the recordings are not cutting edge perfect, it will result as a hindrance in achieving mass exposure. However that’s not to say that M.C. ZackAttack is looking towards mass appeal, he may just want to stay in his lane.
So while the industry tries to find a sense of direction, M.C. ZackAttack is finding his, and manages to make a good track that hopefully not will be passed over by many fans that should drop their clichéd predispositions and give this music a shot!
