BlowinMaddTrees are the kind of rappers you want to hang out with. They’re chilled out guys who usually rhyme about what they love most: hedonistic experiences and the finest Kush. They’ll probably never reach mainstream status, but they seem to like it that way. Their introspective and sometimes unabashed lyrics coupled with their mischievous grins, make them likable rap everymen. Uprooted from Texas to Colorado, BlowinMaddTrees is made of Johhnie Blaze’d & Jay Deezl, aka TheDankestDuo. The duo states that this single means a lot to them, because it is the first track they have done together in over 3 years. It is also the lead-up single to their EP “ThaTrifecta” which they’re currently working on.
On their latest single, “The Scent”, BlowinMaddTrees don’t stray too far from their niche laid-back vibe. They know what works for them. So this is smoke and ride music. The duo bounce off each other and it’s a fun listen with a warm and smooth keyboard dominated production. The duo just roll their shit and smoke it, sounding like the coolest motherfuckers in the place.
It’s a rare thing to treasure in the age of self-proclaimed musical geniuses, selfies, and artists who fight their own fans. BlowinMaddTrees’ insidious intentions on “The Scent” are very smooth. There`s no better word explaining the feeling. It`s raw, soulful and dope at the same time. You won`t even feel the drag from the slow-motioned roll.
I realize you might think that this doesn’t sound particularly innovative. Marijuana has been exhausted as a song topic and rappers who talk about pussy are like music critics who talk about Kendrick Lamar. But BlowinMaddTrees pull it off through pure charisma and skill.
By the end of its four minutes your stoner friends will have found something real groovy to distract them from their daily grinds. “The Scent” is never more than a step away from something entertaining, and putting it into rotation will brighten up even a straight-edge person’s day.
The beat and the overall sound on the track is just immaculate. The entire recording is dripping with shimmering keys, understated soulful choruses, and some low slung bass and drum kicks. Clearly much time and effort was put into crafting the sound for this song.
The results really speak for themselves. It should go without saying that BlowinMaddTrees’ definitely know how to cook up a tasty dish. The duo are most definitely inventors when it comes to the world of hip-hop, but they stay within their hemisphere when they’re doing their weed rap. Their lyrics could kill most beats if the situation came to it, but they retain their laid back feel on “The Scent”.
“The Scent” is not the object of simple lines, but of an entire song that showcases Johhnie Blaze’d & Jay Deezl’s cleverly structured storytelling and open thinking, as well as their wordsmith skills. I’m sure any slightest fan of hip-hop music won’t mind bumping this in the car or at home while chilling.
You won’t find repetitive and monotonous wordplay, instead “The Scent” feels something like a stress-relieving cipher, a conversation with a good friend you bump into after a few years. So sit down, give this track a spin, and be prepared for some quality entertainment.
