R&B/Pop singer-songwriter Zawandi remains consistent and continues to impress on her latest track, “The Night” ft Beaufort Beats. Zawandi is a fantastic artist. Simply fantastic. Unfortunately, R&B suffers the fate of so many musicians being underrated. R&B and Soul as a whole is in an odd place these days, with only a selected few artists excelling in the mainstream. Nonetheless, the faithful soldiers march on, regardless of the adversity. Zawandi impressed on her last single, “Can’t Let You Go”, released in mid-2018. And now she returns even stronger on her latest effort. A funky, retro track for the modern audience, the upbeat song flows as smoothly as butter.
The chorus is the crowning achievement, where the vocals are big, expressive, and authentic. In addition to the chorus, the bridge is alluring, switching things up, while the verses keeps the momentum going strong, not to mention keeping the soul alive. Zawandi’s voice remains exceptional, particularly in the nuances and cracks.
Her authenticity never comes into question. Like the song that preceded this one, Zawandi gives a powerful performance, clearly showcasing her investment into what she’s singing. The production work continues to be old-school with throwback cues, yet slick enough for 2019.
Keeping the punches coming, the up-tempo “The Night” ft Beaufort Beats is funky, infectious ear candy. It’s chocked full of top-notch vocals, and marvelous production work. Furthermore, the chemistry between Zawandi and the work by Beaufort Beats is out-of-this-world.
Zawandi certainly deserves credit for going beyond the expected by delivering an expressive, heartfelt performance. Zawandi may just be one of indie R&B’s most underrated artists, but she doesn’t let that dictate the quality of her output. This is another fine addition to her collection. She doesn’t reinvent the wheel nor does she need to – she stays in her lane with those raspy, soulful pipes doing its thing.
While Zawandi’s songs are soundly executed and enjoyable, and here she seems to perfectly hit her stride on the sensational “The Night” ft Beaufort Beats. From the opening bars showcasing a throwback soulful groove, there’s the sense that Zawandi is absolutely going for the kill.
All in all, “The Night” ft Beaufort Beats is a welcome R&B effort in 2019. With the undercooked efforts by a number of R&B artists last year, Zawandi makes sure she delivers the goods. She does have enormous talent, and an expressive voice rooted in R&B and Gospel traditions that can convincingly convey an inner strength or an aching heart.
Her vocals never lack passion, and her songwriting skills reveal a dedicated craftsmanship. “The Night” ft Beaufort Beats has a real bouncy groove to it, making it a great teaser for any new work, so we’re very excited to hear what else she has in store for us this year.
