Singer, guitarist and songwriter Stig Gustu Larsen spent the first part of the year as part of the TV show The Voice Norway. After which he found the time to release his latest single “WE”. As usual Stig recorded all the instruments, as well as produced and wrote the song. For the first time he also uses a ukulele as the main instrument. Completed within a few hours, the song was apparently written by accident when Stig tried to entertain his 6 month old daughter with a ukulele.
Those who have heard Stig before will know that his voice is flexible and expressive and his often complex melodies complement his lyrics and his unique style. The music also has that rare gift of uplift; his voice and natural optimism seep into you without knowing and you find your spirit has risen since hitting the play button.
Above all else Stig seems to also have the gift of humility and coolness, and here he showcases yet another element of his toolkit – his ability to open the mind and alter the mood. Every once in a while someone comes along that sounds so different, so refreshing, that they deserve recognition for just saving us all from the monotony that the music industry has fallen into.
Stig Gustu Larsen is a prime example of that sound, and his latest single release “WE” showcases it perfectly.
With a style incomparable to the continual electronic bombast and sub bass of trap, Stig proves that there is still a market for musical creativity which involves melody and harmony. This single displays his unique sound, with strong vocals and clever lyrics.
You will find the creative mixture of ukulele and hand-clapping beat, to be a sonic pathway Stig has never ventured before. Add in his heartfelt lyrics and the playful rhythm, and Stig doesn’t miss a beat. Drawing inspiration from within his personal life, Stig sings of the pride and joy he finds in his home.
Stig Gustu Larsen has an irrepressibly sunny disposition here, as he brandishes his airy melody and authentic feel-good splashes, in a combination of exceptional charm, overflowing with life-affirming optimism. The intimacy of this song is as appropriate for a small coffee shop, as the upbeat singalong melody is for an overflowing outdoor arena.
Stig’s got a beautiful voice, chill ukulele vibe, and solid backing music. Without question, this song can stand on its own in his catalog.
As explained by Stig, the song was written on the ukulele, probably without much regard to the rest of the, yet to be introduced, instrumentation. However, the bass, drums, and keys really add to the overall feel of “WE” without it losing its stripped down identity. Listening to a track like this forces me to truly appreciate how much this project uplifts me.
It’s Stig Gustu Larsen at his best. He does a lot of things right but I always adore his gritty high rising voice. His lyrics too are catchy – when you step back and really focus on the words, they’re really good. Musically, he’s solid. The big, soaring chorus has all the potential to make this a massive radio hit, if mainstream latches on to the track.
