The artist Michael Lewis from London UK, makes his debut with the singles “Missed Calls” and “Love Somebody” off his upcoming EP. Influenced by Jazz, Pop and Hip Hop, Lewis developed his passion by listening to artists such as Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, J Cole, Aaliyah, Michael Jackson and many more. These songs are coming from a man deeply passionate about what he does, and this passion radiates in every note of every lyric of every beat. Lewis is ably assisted by the mesmerizing vocals of Aymee Weir, and the two are totally captivating on the mid-tempo number, “Love Somebody”. So too is the chord progression, which is musical manna to my ears and absolutely beautiful. The insistent beat, the smooth keyboard and guitar arrangement, as well the simple and direct lyrics, are just hypnotizing.
Michael Lewis’ music has depth and meaning that we can all relate to. His voice is supple and enveloping, and in the presence of exceptionally strong songwriting, Lewis’ music keeps and holds your attention. Though “Love Somebody” purportedly has its ear on the future, Michael Lewis frequently draws on the past, most notably with a subtle melodic nod to legendary R&B and Soul tones buried inside the cool future electro-pop production. The trick of employing soft and deep laid-back vocal vibes by Lewis, perfectly complements the airy texture of Aymee Weir’s smooth pipes.
Michael Lewis one of those rare artists that actually turns out good material with distinctive vocals and no acrobatics attached. That is a rare achievement in a climate where everyone is trying to throw everything they’ve got at the wall, and hoping that something sticks.
Lewis uses modulation and restraint, doing exactly what is needed on the track, and avoiding any excess which is not in the scope of the record. This gives the track a natural, pure smoothness. Once it starts, it runs through its three and a half minutes fluently and melodically, never missing a beat.
The singer’s vocals mesh wonderfully with guest singer Aymee, and the magic is evident everywhere on the track, especially on the chorus: “And I know that you’ve been through a lot, I’m sorry. And I’m sorry. I just want to love somebody.” On the surface, it’s a love simple song, but it showcases powerful songwriting and interpreting talent.
There’s an unshakeable melody here with a prominent hook. This track is a shining moment for all involved. Between Lewis’ two debut single releases, this is arguably his best work, but it’s a question of personal taste on the listener’s behalf.
“Love Somebody” ft. Aymee Weir, definitely gives you a deep cool, yet emotional vibe when hearing it. There also seems to be some personal thoughts in here too, probably related to Michael Lewis’ own experiences. Brimming with the enigmatical stages of finding, exploring and expressing love, I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a deep, soulful listening experience for their ears and emotions.
