Berani is an electronic beat-maker from Byron Bay on Australia’s east coast. He directs his skill-set within a varied palette of styles, from Hip Hop and EDM through to Electro Pop, Future RnB, chill and downtempo sounds. It is also a proven fact that he is extremely prolific, having already released twenty singles since May 2019. We recently caught up with Berani’s Zouk Bass track, entitled “All Day We Demonstrate”. “What is Zouk Bass?” No the question should not be, what is zouk bass, but rather “What happened to Zouk Bass?” The first global explosion of this style happened in Lisbon during early 2013.
For a few while, it felt like the electronic world was witnessing a musical revolution. There was a sense of hope in the air: maybe those early tracks made by the new architects of zouk bass would rescue dance music with added global appeal, returning the spark that emerged in its beginnings.
It somehow took a while for zouk bass to truly be heard inside the clubs that were already consuming all types of tropical music, and somehow it got relegated to the peripheral dance-floors along the way. Now in 2019, Australia’s Berani attempts to give the style new life on “All Day We Demonstrate”.
It’s a sound, the roots of which derive from Africa and the Caribbean, and which has been updated with modern electronic bass sounds. Zouk Bass is usually at 90bpm but it can range from 85bpm to 100bpm. Here Berani shows his originality, by taking the pace to 105bpm. Strong percussion plays a key part in this style, and is dominant on this single.
Many of us in Europe and America need new challenges, new things, and new sounds to keep us feeling refreshed and maybe to feel that somehow we are progressing on the dance floor. And this is exactly what Berani brings with “All Day We Demonstrate”.
It differs from traditional dance music in many ways, and can be boiled down to the structure of the rhythmic and melodic subdivisions. The slower and steady rhythm, sounds more complex and you actually feel transported into clubs somewhere in Africa or the Caribbean, as Berani takes you away from the usual, formulaic House or Techno based productions.
For zouk bass to truly carry the torch for global club music, it needs more of the rest of the world in on it. It needs to find producers in other scenes that share a common goal of slowing down dance floors, and Berani takes on this challenge perfectly with “All Day We Demonstrate”.
The track is exactly what you need to set the dance floor on fire with its sweaty drum beat, dirty basslines and melodic synth wobbles. It is also definitely a special treat for all the global bass music heads out there. “All Day We Demonstrate” is born out of a desire to produce a world-beating musical force, and Berani wants to do so firmly on his own terms.
