“Heart of Darkness,” inspired by Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novella of the same name, sets the stage for Mystic through using the exposition of colonization in the novella as a metaphor for mental illness and darkness as foreign invaders overtaking one’s life. This was the last track my producer Seven and I created for the album, and we believe it perfectly introduces both the sound and lyrical content of the album — sonically unconventional discussion of an odyssey of mental health and wellness.” – Explains Mackenzie Nicole
Throughout Mystic Mackenzie shares her relatable and personal journey, struggles, and subsequent victory. The songs and accompanying video series unabashedly explore emotional issues, confronting one’s demons, therapy, medication, depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, and ultimately the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.
With her stunning vocals, Mackenzie emerges with a mental toughness that shines through on Mystic, a sometimes somber yet gorgeous and extremely honest and emotional set of songs. “This album is autobiographical and documents a crucial period of my life. When the time came to begin creating the album, and I knew I needed to chronicle my odyssey of mental health and wellness.” – Mackenzie explains
In the Spring of 2018, Mackenzie unveiled her debut album, The Edge. Its songs tallied over 1 million Spotify streams, and her videos totaled 8 million-plus views and although everything seemed OK on the surface, she admits, “That was the worst six months of my life.” On a deeper level, she suffered a mental breakdown. Through a combination of self-actualization and therapy, she returned stronger than ever before. “I’m not the only person who’s been through this. I’m not the only person who has broken down and felt like the only one in the world. I know that to be true. Maybe I can help others avoid making some of the mistakes I did.” – says Mackenzie
