**Can you share a bit about your background and how you got started in music?**

Duane Parham: Absolutely. I was born and raised right here in Detroit, Michigan. Music was always a part of my life, but it wasn’t until I picked up the saxophone that I truly found my passion. I started with the trumpet but quickly realized the saxophone was my calling.

**What inspired you to write your autobiography, “Can You Hear Me Now?”**

Duane Parham: The inspiration behind “Can You Hear Me Now?” stems from a desire to share my journey with others. I wanted to offer readers a glimpse into my experiences, both in music and in life, and hopefully impart some valuable lessons along the way. Those experiences were guideposts that lifted me out of the valleys of fear, dissolved a sense of depression and failure, and carried me over the hilltops of life—a life not measured by material wealth, prestige and power, but measured by faith, confidence, persistence and perseverance. Hopefully, the world “Can Hear Me Now!”

**In your book, you mention intertwining personal anecdotes with practical advice. Can you elaborate on the distinction between musical creativity and the business side of the industry?**

Duane Parham: Certainly. Music and business are two distinct entities that often intersect in the industry. While creativity fuels our passion as musicians, it’s crucial to navigate the business aspects with caution and clarity. Contracts, negotiations, and understanding industry dynamics are all vital components for any artist aiming to succeed.

**Could you share a memorable moment from your career that highlights the unpredictable nature of live performance?**

Duane Parham: One particularly memorable moment was during a performance at the Latin quarters in Detroit. Amidst the music, there was a sudden urgency from the audience, signaling a looming threat. It turned out someone was shooting up front. It was a surreal experience that underscores the unpredictability musicians often face on stage.

**Your autobiography also touches on the influence of your upbringing, particularly your mother’s support. How has her support shaped your journey?**

Duane Parham: My mother’s unwavering support has been instrumental in my journey. She filled a baby book with cherished memories, reminding me of the love and encouragement she always provided. Her support instilled in me a drive to give back and share my experiences with others.

**Your versatility in blending various musical styles has earned you critical acclaim. How do you approach merging genres like jazz, R&B, and gospel in your music?**

Duane Parham: Blending genres is all about finding common ground and allowing each style to complement the other. Whether it’s jazz, R&B, or gospel, I strive to create music that resonates with a diverse audience while staying true to the essence of each genre. Additionally, I believe the essence of all genres is to breathe “soul” into music, connect each listener to the “heartbeats” of harmony, the energy of melody and generate within each person a unique “warmth” only he can express.

**As the CEO of Educational Arts Society, you’re actively involved in mentoring aspiring musicians and promoting music education. What drives your commitment to community engagement?**

Duane Parham: Community engagement is at the core of everything I do. I believe in the power of music to inspire and uplift, and it’s essential to pass on that passion to the next generation. Through mentorship and outreach programs, I aim to foster a love for music and empower future generations of artists.

**Your contributions to music and education have been recognized with five Mayoral Proclamations of Achievement. How does it feel to receive such honors for your work?**

Duane Parham: It’s truly humbling to receive recognition for my contributions to both music and education. Each proclamation represents years of dedication and hard work, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact on my community.

**You were also inducted into the Detroit Legends of Jazz Hall of Fame. What does this honor mean to you personally and professionally?**

Duane Parham: Being inducted into the Detroit Legends of Jazz Hall of Fame is a tremendous honor. It’s a testament to the rich musical heritage of Detroit and the contributions of artists who have shaped its legacy. Personally, it’s a milestone that I’ll always cherish, and professionally, it’s a reminder of the responsibility to continue preserving and promoting jazz music.

**Your spoken word poem and song “Martin’s Dream” have gained acclaim, with legal approval from the King Estate to use a portion of the “I Have a Dream Speech.” What inspired this project?**

Duane Parham: “Martin’s Dream” was inspired by the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his iconic speech. I wanted to pay tribute to his message of hope, equality, and justice through music and spoken word, creating a piece that resonates with audiences today.

**Your autobiography promises to share lessons learned from your interactions with various figures, including musicians, mayors, entrepreneurs, and historians. Can you give us a sneak peek into some of these lessons?**

Duane Parham: The mission and vision of Educational Arts Society is to empower children through music and to foster their artistic, academic, and social development. I got involved with this organization because I believe that music is a powerful tool for learning, creativity, and transformation. I also believe that every child deserves the opportunity to explore and express their musical potential, regardless of their background or circumstances. Through mentorship and outreach programs, my goal is to inspire and empower aspiring musicians to pursue their passion for music fearlessly. I hope to instill in them a love for music and a commitment to lifelong learning, ultimately fostering a community of artists who uplift and support one another.

** What are some of the programs and activities that Educational Arts Society offers to the children and the community?

Duane Parham: Some of the programs and activities that we offer are – Music lessons and workshops in various instruments and genres. Instrument donations and scholarships for students who cannot afford them. Music camps and festivals where students can showcase their talents and learn from professional musicians. Mentoring and tutoring services to help students with their academic and personal goals. Community outreach and partnerships with other organizations that share our vision and values.

**In addition to your musical accomplishments, you’ve also been recognized for your civic contributions with the “Spirit of Detroit” Award. How do you balance your musical career with your commitment to community service?**

Duane Parham: Balancing my musical career with my commitment to community service is about prioritizing both passions and finding ways to integrate them seamlessly. Whether it’s through benefit concerts, outreach programs, or mentoring sessions, I strive to use my platform as a musician to make a positive impact on the communities I serve.

** You have performed with many famous musicians, singers, and celebrities. Can you share some of your memorable experiences and collaborations?**

Duane Parham: There are many. I have performed with Anita Baker, Martha Reeves, Freda Payne, Spider Turner, The Clark Sisters, Shirley Caesar, Rance Allen, and many others. I have also opened for motivational speakers Les Brown and Iyanla Vanzant, and I have met historical figures like Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks. One of my most memorable experiences was being asked by the White House to present an endorsed saxophone to President Bill Clinton at an event in Michigan. At the last minute, the trip to Michigan was re-routed for circumstances unknown to me. However later, the saxophone was sent to President Clinton, and I received immense joy when I saw him play it on The Arsenio Hall Show, but an even deeper and warmer glow, knowing . . . I played the same saxophone!

**Looking ahead, what legacy do you hope to leave through your music and community involvement?**

Duane Parham: Ultimately, I hope to leave a legacy of inspiration, empowerment, and unity through my music and community involvement. Whether through my performances, mentorship, or outreach efforts, I aspire to uplift and inspire others.
