Briceson Lee, artistically known as LeeSon Bryce, was born in Kansas City, MO and raised in Lee Summit, MO (south of Kansas City). First as a drummer for his church since the age of 12, then as a college graduate, manager, and an affiliate owner of a nutrition company LeeSon has always been influenced by music. Now at 23, he is adamant in pursuing what has always been his true passion. Teaming up with other local artists and DJs such as Oblivinatti and Buck, LeeSon Bryce sets out to prove himself in the music industry. The first challenge comes from his 8 track release, “The Proelium EP”.
‘Proelium’, taken from the Latin word meaning battle, or conflict, in this case intends to signify the battle against the struggles of everyday life. Which for LeeSon Bryce could mean anything from depression, emotions due to a failed relationship, or simply trying to study whilst hearing your neighbors having sex.
This EP is an impressive showcase of his luminous talent. LeeSon makes eclectic musical choices that may confuse listeners who lack his expansive inclinations and are too hooked on mainstream pulses. But LeeSon is a beast when it comes to rapping, crafting music that packs a mighty punch, delivered in an understated way. Check out the all-embracing opener “Welcome To Proelium”.
In addition to rap and hip-hop, the entirely fascinating “The Proelium EP” includes funk, indie-rock, pop and neo-soul flavors. LeeSon Bryce’s penchant for gloom on “Keep Hope” and “Kinda Happy”, yields compelling music.
As far as emotional songs go, “Keep Hope” really makes my heart ache. I know exactly what it’s like to have such thoughts and emotions as what LeeSon has conveyed throughout this track. As a matter of fact, I got such intense chills straight from the beginning.
But he also knows how to make a head nod with “That’s Loud”, or spin a captivating story on “So Bad”. For speed-rap enthusiasts, “Through It All” is the EP’s main attraction. This exhilarating flow-show sees LeeSon topping the efforts of some elite speedsters. On these tracks LeeSon Bryce no doubt shows that he has some of the most diverse talent around this genre.
Overall, “The Proelium EP” has some songs that certain fans will like, and songs that certain fans will love, but LeeSon Bryce’s ability to branch out and appeal to all these different audiences should be applauded. Fans of technically proficient hip-hop lyricism, emotional songs, alternative beats, and a dash of humor, are all going to find out how much they adore this guy.
With this recording, LeeSon Bryce is able to channel his emotions from his personal conflicts to create some hard-hitting, creative and relatable music. In addition to sensational rhymes, the production is exceptional, anchored by lush atmospheres and slick drum programming.
