Not so much a singer as a sublime song stylist, Pauline Frechette returns to release an impeccably performed love ballad simply entitled “Always Lover” (feat. David). Avoiding any pretense or extravagance, Pauline stretches her breathy voice to gently embrace the lyrics, as she brings out the ultimate best of her vocal and piano artistry. Pauline wanted you to hear the instruments, the vocals, and the emotion in the breathing etc., instead of a sonic rush of noise. She does this by allowing some ‘quiet’ in the recording.
Pauline is blessed with a great voice, a distinctive and beautifully frayed tone that sounds hip and vulnerable, cool and polished all at once. And when placed in a ethereally haunting composition as this. She is perfectly in her element.
“Always Lover” (feat. David) echoes Pauline’s favorite themes of love and hope. Her sultry vocals draw the listener into an intimate space as only she can. Singing in a hushed, ever-so-sultry, oft times whispery style, you feel that Pauline is speaking intimately to you in a quiet room.
I’ve criticized engineers at times for not bringing the vocalist far enough up in the mix, but the engineer here does a remarkable job, of catching Pauline every breath including some ambient noise.
As one who has heard many tracks by Pauline Frechette, I know this will undoubtedly satisfy her listeners who came aboard as she was building her career playing standards. I’d also suggest to those who are new to Pauline or have been resisting her, to do what I did.
Put your headphones on at night and listen to the finesse and nuance of Pauline Frechette here on “Always Lover” (feat. David). You can’t help but be impressed. Her voice warmly wrapped together with the piano and strings works its magic and delivers a commendable track where each element is as important and captivating as the other.
Her music is often in its most purest form, whether she is in a studio recording it and later you hear it on a record or she is singing live on stage in a concert, her voice comes through with uncanny accuracy and sounds the same no matter what the location.
How many artists you have heard that can sound like that to you? If you happen to be an audiophile like yours truly you’ve got to experience Pauline Frechette on tube amplification and planar speakers, it will render Goosebumps on the soles of your feet and not just all over your body.
