Collegians: “Vaccine” – an effective punch in the face of what this band is capable of

Formed in 2014, the Collegians inked a deal with music label Cultivator Records in 2015, and work on their new album started with the group’s exciting debut-track “Vaccine”. Along with recording their new album, the band also created a brand-new music video for their lead track as well. The Collegians is made up of Glenn Patrick (Vocal, Guitar), Gerry Leigh (Guitar, Vocals), James Leigh (Keyboard, Bass) and Vince Leigh (Drums). “Vaccine” kicks things off on a dark and determined note, with steady drumming that gets your feet moving almost as fast as the infectious and anthemic hook causes you to sing along. This is the type of material fans expect a band in the alternative electro-rock genre to deliver in 2017, and its right here that the Collegians shine their brightest.

What makes the band unique is their eclectic amalgamation of genres – combining indie, electronica, and rock, dressed in both retro and futuristic flavors. The ambition displayed on “Vaccine” implies that the Collegians will not simply be satisfied with dominating popular music – they intend to revolutionize it.

The four-minute plus song serves as an effective punch in the face of what this band is capable of: punchy synths, fervent guitars, and soaring rock choruses. Add to that, the lyrical depth they carve into theme of the song. The last time I was this excited by a modern rock band, was when I heard Muse for the first time in 1999.We all know where they have arrived since!

There is not a doubt in my mind that the Collegians will thrive if they continue to put out quality material as they have here. Glenn Patrick’s vocal prowess is prominently displayed through the verses and choruses, reaching its apex in a brilliant production move during the last chorus section, just before the refrain, in a line that goes something like “…to save me somehow”. The high note hit on the ‘how’ part of ‘somehow’ is extremely captivating and will send shivers down your spine.

Truly great bands separate themselves from the crowd by paying attention to what may seem like trite details to others. The ‘somehow’ sung piece, could so easily have been executed in a hundred different ways, but this is surely the choice that will stun audiences into paying attention to the theme of being addicted to something, and in my book it makes a great song, become a brilliant song.

“Vaccine” is built upon energizing chord progressions and electrifying choruses, as the Collegians showcase their thorough understanding of balancing light and dark tones within the musical arrangement, before crashing through the threshold of the bridge and into sonic infinity, where the sublime becomes euphoric, and they take the listener with them!

If the Collegians do not make it to the Grammy’s, or come up with a platinum-selling record within the next 3 to 4 years, I will personally board a plane, fly to Melbourne, Australia, and bash them over their f*cking heads for wasting so much talent!
