Born in New York City, Markus Scott grew up in humble surroundings, and his family were always on the move resulting in him constantly transferring schools. He excelled at reading and writing poetry, before discovering that he could rap when he won a freestyle battle with a signed artist at a house party in Harlem. He soon learned to DJ too, and with his first check from summer youth, Markus went to a pawn shop and brought a laptop. He then brought a DAW, and microphone from Guitar Center and began researching how to mix and edit his vocals. He dropped his first track in 2015 and then went on to release his 6 track EP “Graduation Night” in June 2016 on his graduation day. In August of the same year, Markus released the single “Swervin” alongside a music video that started to create a buzz.
Which brings us right up to the summer of 2017, and Markus Scott’s latest full-length 14 track project, “Live Life With No Regrets”. The album is the embodiment of all the challenges and overcoming of hardships Markus has gone through to finally achieve this recording which should well and truly set him on his way.
Scott does two things well; flip his lyrics into potential contemporary hits that maintain a simple charm and wonder, as well as proficiently rap with catchy tone that rivals other artists in the same lane. As an album seeking to tell a story, this does it well.
“Live Life With No Regrets” is essentially an amalgamation of influences from differing styles of Hip-hop music into a cohesive piece. As Markus explained previously on the release of his single “Bump & Grind”, his music has undergone a change from his earlier recordings which focused more on conscious material before he discovered that this generation seeked-out something different.
So he switched his style and attitude to move up his buzz into trendier rap circles. Whether or not you enjoy Markus Scott’s personality, or current all-round aesthetic, his music proves to be equal parts infectious and well-crafted, qualities that many artists making similar music lack.
It is clear from the intro that Markus’ confidence is sky high on this project. He effortlessly flips between vivid reflection and unapologetic flexing throughout several instrumental changes. This coupled with the atmospheric production help to make the whole listening experience cinematic, yet easy on the ear. This album is highly polished and targeted to the masses, with star performances coming in on, “Grindin”, “Hopped Out”, “Know My Name”, “Flipped”, “Your Girl” ft Joes Mill Vill and “Letter”.
Much of Markus’ considerable talents as a rapper are here on full display. The result is an album that works hard at leaving the impression that this young man is working hard to create his future within this genre. “Live Life With No Regrets” is ambitious and lavish, with Markus Scott determined to seize a destiny he believes is his for the taking.
