Peter Senior is superb, quite simply. He has the coolest delivery of any modern balladeer, which is what you could consider him, until you hear his up-tempo songs. His voice ca be soft and mellow, strong and insistent when the song requires it. He gives depth to anything he sings, and his voice far exceeds the people whom he would most often be compared to. The songs on his album “On The Edge” are really bright and fresh but with that classic throwback vibe. With everything from pop and country, to soft rock and good old rhythm and blues Peter surfs the genre-breaking waves with ease. Backed by fully fleshed piano driven arrangements often embellished with a range of horn lines. He sings a wide variety of songs and styles, with a wide variety of moods, and with such sincerity. It’s clear that through his performances, he has matured into a consummate performer and will only get better and better with time.
“Cool Ride” is the feature track from Peter’s debut album. Full of double entendre and risqué lyrical flavors, Peter Senior infuses the track with his usual loaded charisma. However, if there’s one undeniable fact about Peter’s artistry, it’s that he has an uncanny ability to perfectly match whatever genre of music he’s tackling vocally.
From his smooth ballads to the more vocally inspired takes, he manages to shift his voice in a way that makes it palatable and fitting consistently without fail. This is a trait that once again shows itself on “Cool Ride” – a track with diverse back-and-forth styles that once again showcase his immense vocal talents.
Of course the piano plays a major part in Peter Senior’s musical arrangements, and is always on hand, just a quarter of a step behind his vocal prowess. And from the very first moment, shows off the scope it’s trying to achieve, on both the album and this single.
“Cool Ride” is also beautifully and soulfully embellished by the brass interludes, which add a further dimension to the slick orchestration. But it’s just after the two-minute mark that Peter breaks into beast mode. If like me you have a penchant for those mega Meatloaf-like vocal escapades when all hell breaks loose. This is where you need to be in the song.
Snapping back and forth between a growl and a whisper, Peter’s ability to smoothly meld each vocal nuance without dropping a single note, is on full show here from the first moment. This definitely feels like a regular knockout Peter Senior single, and it’s definitely a high quality one that shows off his multitude of talents extremely well.
Clearly both modern and retro in sound, there’s a surprising swagger about “Cool Ride”. While it is naughtily tongue in cheek, it’s an irresistibly fun ride. The singer-songwriter from Sydney Australia is incredibly talented and his songs are masterfully recorded. On listening to “Cool Ride” it feels like you are there at one of Peter Senior’s live performances. A thrilling experience indeed!
