Maryland based music group Dreamstate is made up of Josh Hilson, Tyler Gagnon, and Kyle Santos. All of who come from diverse musical backgrounds, ranging from country music to Hip Hop and R&B. They’ve blended their influences into smooth R&B melodies, overlaying lush electronic pop sounds in their very own DreamLabs studio. 2018 saw the release of the band’s critically acclaimed debut EP “Take Care”. From which comes the single, “Two Hands”, which also has a video in the making. It’s an emotionally moving track which features a catchy and uplifting chorus with the impressive vocal style of lead singer Josh Hilson on full display. It is definitely one of the peaks off the EP. Infectious melodies, soaring vocals, ceaseless enthusiasm and vibrancy that take us to deeper, introspective places within our hearts, seems to be a Dreamstate musical trademark, as they forge songs which capture and captivate our attention constantly.
Inevitably seducing us with a slow-burning groove and vivid lyrical teasing, “Two Hands” steadily builds towards intense crescendos showcasing Hilson’s vocal range and timbre. With a burning, building beat and an explosive emotion of a chorus, it’s truly difficult not to put this song on repeat, sing along, and forgo listening to the rest of the EP.
Which, by the way, is just as good as this opening track. Taking into account the addictive quality of Dreamstate’s brand of rich, pop-induced R&B, one could reasonably expect catchy songs without substance. This trio of talented artists however, successfully avoid this trap.
Dreamstate’s music, though boasting consistent catchiness, also incorporates a delectable combination of continuity, depth, and progression. They embrace beautiful orchestration, intricate guitar runs, and building percussion, while vocally featuring heartfelt pipes, sweet harmonies, and the rare, raucous, shouted choruses.
This complete command over their craft really sets the Treble Mind Entertainment signed group apart, resulting in the kind of music that grabs you at first listen and becomes more meaningful every time through.
The lyrics in “Two Hands” contemplate empathy and direction, and the chorus is so compelling that you’ll find yourself humming it hours later. The song offers a slow start that eventually swells into a triumphant, emotional conclusion.
You can feel the sincerity in the repetitions of “I just want to put two hands on you baby”, making straightforward communication. “I said I got two hands on you baby. And I’m not one that you’ll lose. Oh I’ll be careful with you. No you’ve got nothing left to prove.” It’s an irresistible wall of heartfelt emotion which lyrically paints a picture of love and devotion.
For a moment, the listener will almost lose their sense of self while listening to “Two Hands”. Melody and emotion in its purest forms transfixes the listener before the feeling of uplifting inspiration takes over.
Josh Hilson, Tyler Gagnon, and Kyle Santos piece together experiences and lessons of life and love, and molds them into beautiful songs that raise self-awareness and promote empowerment. “Two Hands” clearly demonstrates the power of love.
