Hustle Gee is a 24 year-old, Detroit raised artist who started making music at 16. Now living in New York, Hustle Gee has a son and daughter while he continues his grind in the game. The artist is currently riding high with his track “Actin Tough”, with many more still to come. Check out the video of the single down below.
- Can you tell us a bit about where you come from and how you got started?
Hustle Gee: Well I was born in Alabama raised between Detroit & Bermuda kind of back and forth. I’ve always been into music I played a few instruments even was part of a drum line. I tried rap in like 8th grade and kind of just took off with it.
- Do you handle both the songwriting and beats on your songs, or do you collaborate with others?
Hustle Gee: I definitely write all my songs and I rarely do features but my beats I always just find the ones I like and buy them at least till learn how to make them
- Who were your first and strongest musical influences that you can remember?
Hustle Gee: man I remember watching young money music videos on B.e.t and saying I want that lifestyle but my musical influences are broad to many to name.
- What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners?
Hustle Gee: I’d say the main element would be that I don’t rap about nothing I haven’t done or seen all of my music stems from real life situations. Which I’d consider relatable to some.
- For most artists, originality is first preceded by a phase of learning and, often, emulating others. What was this like for you? How would you describe your own development as an artist and music maker, and the transition towards your own style?
Hustle Gee: I fasho went through a couple phases lol considering I been on both sides of the fence. I’ve had a taste of paradise and the struggle so when I was younger like 14-15 years old my music wasn’t serious I was just having fun with it compared to after that I got more “experienced” and had more to talk about as I figured myself out.
- What’s your view on the role and function of music as political, cultural, spiritual, and/or social vehicles – and do you try and affront any of these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of technical artistry, personal narrative and entertainment?
Hustle Gee: I believe music runs the world. Think about it music can change your mood. Music can speak words that you can’t express. Music is a language of its own. Also I believe my music gives people insight on a part of life they may not be aware of, and the people that are aware hopefully I can be the voice for them and help them get through any rough patches. Yet manage to be entertaining at the same time.
- Do you ever write a song with current musical trends, formulas or listener satisfaction in mind, or do you simply focus on your own personal vision and trust that people will empathize with your sound?
Hustle Gee: I feel like if I made music like music that currently exist I wouldn’t stand out! So I focus creating my sound and my vision and just keep in mind that there people that will rock with it and there are some that won’t.
- Could you describe your creative processes? How do start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Do you usually start with a beat, or a narrative in your head?
Hustle Gee: honestly it just come to me it’s hard to explain. I rap what I live that’s all it is honestly. I don’t need a beat to write a song.
- What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your career so far?
Hustle Gee: Becoming social and adjusting to the aspects of being an artist.
- On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your career so far?
Hustle Gee: I’ve been on BET that was the beginning of my career I’ve had a few big artist reach out to me. But the thing I’m most proud of is the growth and development in my music.
- Which aspects of being an independent artist excites you most and which aspects discourages you most?
Hustle Gee: The part that excites me is I have the opportunity to see the work I put in pay off gradually. But the discouraging factor is that it’s a bit harder and may take a bit longer than let’s say an artist with a record deal or team behind them.
- How did the moniker Hustle Gee come about?
Hustle Gee: I already had the nickname Gee I just added hustle to it cause that’s what I do baby 🤷:skin-tone-5:♂️
- If you had a choice to go on tour with any acclaimed international artist in the near future, who would you choose, and why?
Hustle Gee: Oouu! That’s a tough one I feel like I’d go crazy on tour with Roddy Rich or Lil Baby. That sh*t would go crazy!
- With social media having a heavy impact on our lives and the music business in general, how do you handle criticism, haters and/or naysayers in general? Is it something you pay attention to, or simply ignore?
Hustle Gee: I’ve never been the type of person to care what people said about me that’s why I am who I am. I barely care about social media as it is.
- Could you tell us something about your latest project and what the highlights are to watch out for?
Hustle Gee: I just dropped my EP “The Unspoken Hustle” and a few singles after that be on the lookout for more videos and be prepared on see me everywhere!
- Do you have a personal favorite track amongst those in your catalogue that has a specific backstory and/or message and meaning very special to you?
Hustle Gee: my favorite songs right now is “actin tough” and reason behind that is I feel like that’s the record that sparked the flame that had me hot now !
- Creative work in studio environment, or interaction with a live audience? Which of these two options excite you most?
Hustle Gee: Both actually I love doing shows and seeing the reaction from the audience and nothing makes me happier than being in the studio and creating.
- What’s your favorite motto, phrase or piece of advice, you try to live or inspire yourself by?
Hustle Gee: “It is what it will be” & “Everything happens for a reason”
- How essential do you think video is in relation to your music? Do you have a video you could suggest fans see, to get a better understanding of your craft?
Hustle Gee: I think visuals are super important! People can hear you all day but everyone wants to see the voice behind their favorite song! With that being said the video for “actin tough” is on YouTube!
- What do you find most rewarding about what you do? And do you have a specific vision or goal set in your mind that you would like to achieve in the near future?
Hustle Gee: I just want the world to hear me! And of course I want to make a major impact in the game! I wanna build a legacy and die a legend!
