Johanna Breed: “Mister” makes her sound like the woman of the hour

A Maine native currently based in Greensboro, NC, songstress Johanna Breed has built strong connections in her local music scene supporting other acts as a backup singer and pianist, before launching her own solo career. Her community supported the creation of her video for “Mister” through a Kickstarter campaign she completed in the fall of 2018. The video and single follows on the heels of her debut EP, entitled “Is It Too Late?” Many artists want to make their presence as intense as possible to an appreciative audience. Johana captures everyone’s attention simply by just being her subtle talented self. The naturally gifted singer, has a manner which is reserved, solidly concentrating on creating perfection in her music without drawing too much attention to herself.

Johanna Breed’s every song is a work in perfection, also partly due to the help of Greensboro-based producer and performer Quilla, together they form a formidable team, and it shows across the EP. “Mister” begins with Johanna really showcasing her ability to create subtle runs with her voice, demonstrating her technical skills. Her phrasing and nuancing is intricate and complex, as she creates counter melodies and angular rhythms against the backdrop of rattling percussion, hand-claps and swirling keys.

When the chorus comes in Johanna’s vocal runs become more powerful, and her upper range shines. The song is a soulful pop anthem with just a hint of world-fusion thrown in for good measure. From time to time artists arrive on the music scene who come to personify a particular style.

Sometimes it’s because they invented it, or often because they popularized it. Here the former instance applies, as Johanna Breed, brings her own peculiar style to bear. The mix of Quilla’s atmospheric soundscape, strong instrumentation, and Johanna’s quaint vocal delivery are what really heighten the drama and dynamics of this song.

The structure of “Mister” may not sound like a typical mainstream song playing on your radio right now, and that’s what makes it so exciting. The song takes cues from a diverse selection of vintage ideas and infuses Johanna’s personality and charm, with a futuristic arrangement to make the product entirely unique, and an absolute keeper.

Love for music is a peculiar thing. That love enables you to appreciate many different genres, styles and sounds, from those that fall into any sort of creative or technical excellence. Johanna Breed is a perfect example or this category of music maker.

Moreover she has that something special in her voice. The way it portrays a very soul-like and otherworldly essence is something that easily draws you in. Once again, not being an avid listener of Johanna Breed, this is my first experience, and it was an extremely positive one. All in all, this is a beautiful record, supported by a superb video. In honesty, this track makes Johanna Breed sound like the woman of the hour.
