Myja display a very specific amount of fearlessness

Los Angeles, CA-based side project Myja featuring Michael Marquart and Jacob Bunton release their debut self-titled album on January 12th, 2018. The record was produced, engineered and mixed by Jason Elgin (Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster, Collective Soul), at The Barn, Marquart’s studio in Malibu, CA. In today’s world of singles, short attention spans and immediate gratification, it goes against the grain to release a 10 track rock album. But then I guess that Myja are not a band to go along with the crowd. Let’s face it: Being a classic rock band in 2018 requires a very specific

NOAH ARCHANGEL & THE BAND OF THE HAWK – “THE MASCHINE WARS: SONGS OF SOLOMON”

The Maschine Wars: Songs of Solomon is a journey more complex and original, yet more accessible than anything Noah Archangel & The Band of the Hawk may have released before it. The fact that it exists at all is testament to the projects perseverance, raw talent, and prophetic direction with which Noah Archangel, King Aka Yeaux Majesty, Ash Ra Aka Houey Freeman Fka Ashtonomics, P.ey3, Grynd Seazon, and Juskwam steer the good ship Band of the Hawk aka BOHUP, to the richest musical waters; plucking out those worth bringing along on their musical voyage and creating records greater than the

Esteban Alvarez: “Piano meets Mariachi” ft. El Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán – sophisticated and ambitious

Esteban Alvarez is an award-winning pianist and composer, originally from San José, Costa Rica. Ever since relocating to Texas USA to study music, his priority and goal has been to bridge cultures through my music. His idea was to bring the noble elegance of the piano together with the folkloristic vibrancy of the Mariachi. Hence he launched the album project entitled “Piano meets Mariachi”, which became a reality in 2017. The resulting recording features eight tracks and a 15-piece Mariachi band – El Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán, known as one of the best bands of their genre. The collective represents a

T.C. Crosser: “The Book of Arius – Act I” – versatility, sensitivity, and humility

After years of composing, playing and producing indie and punk, pianist T.C. Crosser moved towards combining chamber strings and rock/pop to tell narrative stories with instrumental music. The composer has also scored music for commercials (such as Microsoft), television (such as Visionaries: Inside The Creative Mind), and performance art companies (such as Leslie Seiters Dance). His latest release, “The Book of Arius – Act I”, is a four movement narrative for string quartet which explores three distinct points in T.C. Crosser life. The recording was done using a 14 mic array for the string quartet and then processed through a

Collegians: “Black Mass” – a hardline anti-establishment stance

Collegians occupy a unique place among the constellation of alternative rock acts that have emerged in the last few years. They seem as interested in the pop half of that portmanteau, while still creating a progressive hard-hitting swamp that sprouts elements of rock, electronic, and proto-industrial acts. It’s an admirable path to travel, as a lesser band would just as easily replicate the sounds of mainstream radio or the genre’s past successes. Instead, Glenn Patrick (Vocal, Guitar), Gerry Leigh (Guitar, Vocals), James Leigh (Keyboard, Bass) and Vince Leigh (Drums) have made moves to maintain their path of sonic evolution which they started with their stunning, critically acclaimed

Amaal: “Need It Too” – The chorus is incredibly catchy, latching upon the first listen

Amaal is a pop singer from Washington D.C. who has struggled with chronic pain and depression for years, and music has been a key in relief of his symptoms. He has been studying and performing music since he was 4 years old, and started taking singing lessons as he gravitated towards pop and jazz at fourteen. “Need It Too”, Amaal’s latest single makes the statement it needs to. The newcomer’s distinctive voice cuts through the melody sliding up and down the scales and packed with soul. From this point on he’s definitely on a winning streak as he impresses with his

Roubix: “Girls” – bolstered by the steady pulse of electro music

Synth-pop artist Roubix, who started his career in 2011, is still something of an enigma in the underground music business. Owned by two record companies, his identity has never been confirmed. The artist who performs live and records his music between Stockholm, Sweden and London, had a stint in the United Kingdom selections for 2014 Eurovision contest, and will apparently again be up for representing the UK in Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal with his brand new song “Girls”. Roubix’s sound has expanded its horizons. That audible love of the 80s is still present, but the synths are bolstered by

Recklous: “Friends and Fam” – a heavy dose of personal scrutiny and a dash of harsh reality

It’s pretty hard to believe that rapper Recklous only dropped his first professionally produced track at the beginning of 2017. Over the years leading up to now, Santa Cruz’s very own lyrical wonder has balanced three personas: The reserved, well-mannered kid, an uplifting positive artist full of ambition and wisdom and an emcee whose love for hard hitting Hip Hop and lightening quick raps defines his sound. Slowly the first began to fade, leaving the remaining two in clear vision. Finally Recklous’ latest studio project is on its way, with a brand new single giving fans a clear picture of his creative vision.

Filled with fast-paced rhymes, a heavy dose of personal scrutiny and a dash of harsh reality, the plainly titled “Friends and Fam” further cements Recklous’ role as one of the fastest improving newcomers onto the scene. Something he already proved on his previous outing with the single, “Blackout”, produced by (Prod. Aq1notx).

As a single, “Friends and Fam” is somewhat representative of everyone who plays a role in Recklous‘ life. Throughout the story Recklous expresses true positivity and self-empowerment. And if his intention is to motivate himself and listeners to never give up on their dreams, while not forgetting about the people close to them, his doing a great job here.

This track has a super chill bass-driven vibe to it, and Recklous spits some unbelievable lyrics filled with honesty and truth about the harsh reality of being on your grind, throughout the song.

Recklous has mastered the art of rapping fast over inspirational-sounding beats, but not to disguise the fact that he is spewing surface-level shit like some of his peers. His abundance of lyrical substance is easily apparent, as he succeeds in sparking some strong emotion through his energetic rapping.

Recklous is clearly not the same person and artist he was before this single. He’s better. This track is a personal one for Recklous as it’s about his reflection of the current stage he’s at in his life and seeing how far he’s come. He successfully finds the balance between brilliantly executed composition and complex lyricism on “Friends and Fam”.

Recklous does have huge potential and the body of work that truly sets him free from underdog territory, cannot be too far away. “Friends and Fam” deserves attention regardless though, as it is a track that diverts substantially from the repetitive and formulaic music that is all too frequent today. This track could provide a taste for what is yet to come from Recklous, and there is absolutely no doubt that his career is moving in the right direction.
