Alex Jenkins grew up in a small town called Anderson, South Carolina. He began playing music at age 14. Since then he has had a passion to pursue his career writing songs. Alex Jenkins is currently on radio rotation with the tracks “Coming Back To You” and “We Hold On”. Jenkins’ great strength is in singable songs with worthwhile lyrics, which he performs with skill and real feeling. His distinctive voice is on great form and some driving beats are also in evidence in-between the acoustic-guitar strumming and sometimes laid-back feel.
His song catalog shows several genuine musical qualities. Catchy hooks and melodies, deep yet playful lyrics, great delivery, and all topped off with unflinching emotion that shows no sign of trepidation. Listening to him, you can simply absorb his deliberately organic, warm sound as it is, or you can identify the other influences that color his music. Alex Jenkins definitely positions himself within the noble singer-songwriter tradition, sounding almost grizzled and world-weary, but from his voice I would imagine that he is still part of the younger generation.
Simply put, he writes his music in a way that is both poetic and accessible. There are rare flaws here and there in the production but one comes to accept and even enjoy them with repeated listening. It all seems to make sense. Jenkins has an uncanny sense of his world and is able to convey that through lyric and music. As for musicianship, he’s truly fine. If you listen to his recordings, he rarely has timing issues and pitch problems. His melodic sense is also enchanting. He’s pure and simple, as well as an adept guitar player – Most of all, he sings from the heart, where we discover his tenderness, vulnerability and honesty.
Our world has become jaded and too complicated a place where savoring a song that might touch your heart has seemingly gone by the wayside. But if you’re tired of boy-bands and girl-bands who add their auto-tuned vocals to overproduced songs that all sound the same, in that case, you have got to hear Alex Jenkins. There is nothing shallow about his music.
