Blupa Music is the retro pop expression of Norwegian guitarist, singer, songwriter and audio recording artist Geir Erlend Roev. He has just released two digital singles – “Repetition Of Life” and “Mama Earth (We Shall Meet Again)”, as well as a double-sided vinyl edition of the same tracks. It’s hard to believe music that sounds at times “so simple” can be so creative. This is music from the heart that will feel good in your soul. Blupa Music has been carving out his own singular niche since his nascent days. He struck creative gold from that point onward, veering from strength to strength.
With his dreamy guitar spinning jangly landscapes and his voice weaving hazy melodies and harmonies, Blupa Music has been steadily building an impressive catalog, and with his latest exhibit of work, the singer songwriter looks to continue doing so without breaking a stride. His writing, already literate and cryptically sharp, has progressed as well as his arrangements: “Time flies can you believe it’s fall again so soon, Feels like just yesterday we raked up fallen leaves, What is what is the meaning of it all?” he sings on “Repetition Of Life”.
Turn up the volume and you’ll be a step closer to understanding the remarkable talent and musical grace of Blupa Music. Like those contemporaries, he’s pushing those pigeon holes away to bring you something that’s really interesting, really listenable and really, really great.
Throughout his songs, there are sparks of wonder that transcend Blupa Music’s into genius – a dash of horns here, the canned harmonies lifting the atmosphere of the song there, and so on and so forth.
The songs are incredibly dynamic and touch on well-worn signifiers of alt-pop music traditions. Apart from the lush compositions and layered lyrical themes, the tracks also succeed perhaps most obviously from Blupa Music’s own incredibly plaintive voice.
With a welcoming and a likeably schmaltzy delivery that finds him displaying loads of range and emotions, he’s able to give his subject matter the unforgiving and ultimately warm treatment it deserves.
If you’re already on board with Blupa Music, then his latest efforts provide more strength to the cause. If you’re not quite there yet, then this could be the very record to push you off the fence. Smart, soulful, dreamy and with a number of new musical toys on display, “Repetition Of Life” and “Mama Earth (We Shall Meet Again)” is a set of singles that suggests Blupa Music is going anywhere but down.
