Sarves Thiru is a musician with roots in Malaysia. She began her musical journey at the age of eight, when she started studying Carnatic music and learning to play the veena and piano. Sarves eventually moved to the city, where she met Srimathi Vijayalakshmi Kulaveerasingam, who became a key figure in her musical development. After relocating to the United Kingdom, Sarves was introduced to Srimathi Sivasakthi Sivanesan, who taught her music at the Bhavan in London. During this time, Sarves Thiru was also initiated into the practice of Kriya Yoga and began meditating, which continues to inspire her music to this day.
After taking an extended break from music, Sarves returned to it during the COVID-19 pandemic and began taking classes again with Sivanesan. Sadly, Sivanesan passed away in 2021, but Sarves has continued to pursue her dream of composing and sharing original music.
Based in London with her family, Sarves Thiru released her debut single in July 2022 and followed that up with a second single, gaining attention through new age charts, specialized playlists, blog and publication coverage, as well as radio airplay.
On January 27, 2023, Sarves Thiru releases her third single, entitled “Victory: Vakratunda”, which within its meaning, declares: “Lord with the curved trunk and huge body, whose brilliance is equivalent to billions of Suns, May you remove all obstacles on my path And bless all my endeavours with Victory and success.”
Locked within its blend of world and ambient music flavors, the song also leans on the subtle beauty of Sarves’ Carnatic music influences, which bring spiritual depth, as well as its ability to convey a wide range of emotions and inspire a sense of devotion.
One of the unique features of Carnatic music is its use of microtones, or notes that fall between the standard Western chromatic scale. This allows Sarves Thiru, to vocally deliver, a deeper range of expression and the ability to capture subtler shades of emotion.
Sarves shows once again on “Victory: Vakratunda”, that she has a deep understanding of the nuances and intricacies of her music composition and is further aided by her technical proficiency and control over her voice.
Sarves Thiru clearly has a strong foundation in classical vocal technique and is able to effectively employ techniques such as gamakas (ornamentation) and manodharma sangeetham (improvisation in raga) to add depth and expression to her performance..
However, she never overuses these techniques, allowing her music to appeal to a much wider western audience while still maintaining her authenticity and staying true to her musical roots. All of Sarves Thiru’s hard-earned skills help the singer-songwriter to connect with her audience on a deep and emotional level.
The beauty of Sarves Thiru’s mellifluous vocal performance, which is layered with poignant harmonies, lies in its ability to engage the listener and create a powerful sense of cohesion and structure within the sweeping gorgeousness of the musical arrangement.
Overall, the splendor of “Victory: Vakratunda” – much like Thiru’s previous work – lies in its ability to transport the listener to a peaceful and serene place, and to create a sense of relaxation, spirituality and introspection.
