Cory M. Coons – “33.3” – an expertly crafted offering

For 30 years strong, Canadian rocker, Cory M. Coons has been an independent musician, singer, performer and now award-winning and nominated songwriter. . His singles have earned him accolades at the Radio Music Awards and the World Songwriting Awards. His albums have been recognized at the International Singer Songwriters Association (ISSA Awards), the Ottawa Sound Music Awards, The Los Angeles Music Awards and the Producer’s Choice Honors. His 2018 melodic/roots-rock album “The Long Road Home”, was produced by multi-platinum veteran music producer Ron Nevison, (Heart, Bad Company, Damn Yankees, Survivor, Styx, Night Ranger).

Cory M. Coons is currently promoting his EP entitled “33.3”. With a short runtime, there isn’t a single B-side to be found. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I love shorter run-times as artists tend to focus on perfection, rather than filling the available capacity of a long playing format. The mid-tempo “Leavin” is the perfect song to commence the recording with. The melody and musicality will envelop you as Cory’s vocal is so clear you’ll feel he is in the room with you.

“I’m so tired of all the trying. Not pulling punches anymore. The past is in my rear view mirror. I left that battle at the door. Now I’m leavin’ in the morning, I must be on my way. Headed for tomorrow, it’s time I make a change…” It’s clear that Cory is a keen observer of life with an impeccable ability to put into words what it’s like to be, at the risk of sounding cliché, human. His music is for people who really want to think and feel, and also want it to sound great.

The songs on “33.3” are deep, rich and polished, while Cory M. Coons wears his influences proudly on his sleeve. One of the great things about listening repeatedly to an entire album or EP, is that it’s usually a song that doesn’t grab you right away that ends up staying with you the longest. In this case for me it’s “Good Times Gone” which is such a bold, multi-layered piece of organic songwriting that it just blows me away.

I am a big fan of musicians who know how to write quality songs that tell a story without being too sappy in one extreme or too obtuse in the other extreme. Such is the case with “Good Times Gone”. Cory is a wonderful storyteller and though his characters and their stories may seem personal, the underlying themes are universal. His ability to use simple, straightforward everyday language to communicate deeper ideas is remarkable and rare.

“Another Lonely Heart” comes blasting out of the speakers with more urgency. Cory has put his words and feelings so poignantly into the song that you can feel the emotions of every note, chorus and guitar lick. This is another expertly crafted song offering a personal perspective on the trials and tribulations of living and loving.

All throughout this EP, there is brilliant songwriting, very relatable lyrics, great singing, and excellent musicianship. Cory M. Coons is the real deal. There are few independent artists in his musical field putting stuff out on this level right now.
